Midwives on Wheels
Mother Helpage Uganda is a community-based maternal health initiative dedicated to saving the lives of mothers and newborns in underserved urban and peri-urban communities.
Every minute counts during childbirth
Mother Helpage Uganda is a community-based maternal health initiative dedicated to saving the lives of mothers and newborns in underserved urban and peri-urban communities. Based along Komamboga Hospital Road in Kampala, the project supports over 100 households where access to timely and skilled maternal healthcare remains a major challenge.
The Midwife on Wheels project was created in response to frequent maternal emergencies, delayed transportation to health facilities, and limited access to skilled birth attendants—especially during night hours or sudden labor complications.
In the heart of Kampala, along Komamboga Hospital Road, more than 100 households share a common challenge — access to timely maternal healthcare. For many pregnant women, reaching a hospital during labor or an emergency is not easy. And sometimes, help arrives too late.
In Uganda, maternal emergencies are often made worse by poor transport, traffic congestion, and a shortage of skilled midwives at the community level. A simple delay can cost a life — a mother, a newborn, or both.
Midwife on Wheels uses motorbike ambulances operated by trained midwives to reach pregnant women quickly — even in narrow or congested areas. When a call comes in, the midwife rides directly to the mother’s home, providing immediate care, stabilising emergencies, and transporting her safely to a health facility when needed.
The project provides:
- Emergency maternal response
- Skilled midwife care during labor
- Safe referrals to hospitals
- Maternal health education for families
All delivered right where it’s needed most — in the community.
For over 100 households, Midwife on Wheels means hope. It means faster care, safer deliveries, and healthier mothers and babies. Most importantly, it means lives saved.
Why It Matters
Every minute counts during childbirth. The Midwife on Wheels project ensures that no woman is left behind simply because she cannot reach a hospital in time. By bringing skilled care directly to the doorstep, Mother Helpage Uganda is transforming maternal healthcare—one ride, one mother, and one life at a time.
Every mother deserves a safe birth.
Every child deserves a healthy start.
